about

'Struggle Music' is Longshot's 8th studio album. It was co-produced entirely by Shot's long time collaborator This Guy I Know aka TGIK. The duo began working on the project in 2009, right as Long was making the move from Chicago to Minneapolis. After winning the Jake One/Rhymesayers Entertainment 'White Van Music' remix contest, Shot decided he was in need of a fresh start and new inspiration. Having accompanied fellow emcee Psalm One on multiple RSE tours, Longshot got to know the city of Minneapolis more intimately and decided that would be his next stop. With his contract in Chicago coming to an end and a new opportunity with one of the best labels in the world, Minneapolis made perfect sense, and so Shot made the journey North and began working on 'Struggle Music'. The idea behind the title is everyone struggles. But it's not the actual struggle that defines us as people, but how we respond to the struggle. That's where the definition of character comes from. TGIK's production on this album perfectly provides the diverse soundscape needed to tell each tale of survival. Songs like 'Life's Unfair' and 'No Guarantees' speak to the idea that we are not all promised happiness but can attain it on our own means. 'Caint Let You Go' ft. Jeremy Nutzman touches on the topic of struggling to love and let go, while bringing the blues to hip hop for the listener. 'Over' is a triumphant anthem and banger for the modern pragmatic. Backed by TGIK's driving kick and stabbing keys, Longshot explains how he uses music, the creative and listening process, to get through pain, disappointment and everyday life struggles. Lines like: "it's not where you're from/so much as to where you're going/& knowing that the journey was worth it/to you you owe it..." speak to what this song, and Longshot's career, is all about: perseverance. With assistance from guest emcees Desdamona('Intro'), Haphduzn('Know My Pain), Toki Wright('Over) and Jeremy Nutzman('Caint Let U Go'), 'Struggle Music' is sure to leave an indelible mark on the soul of hip hop culture. How do you respond to your struggle
